Tradesmen’s Centre – Móricz Zsigmond Cultural Centre

The Tradesmen’s Centre in Barcs was opened 90 years ago, it was built by the locals from public donations. Today it is the Móricz Zsigmond Cultural Centre, and the former tradesmen’s house is the dance hall. The tradesmen society of Barcs decided to build its headquarter on the former Jausz site in 1930. The construction was largely done on their own, but they also issued support stamps to accelerate the whole process. The completed building housed a large hall and a buffet, and the large hall also served as a cinema. Its inauguration took place on 2 August, 1931. After the nationalization, the District House of Culture was housed in the headquarter, and in the late 1950s it was expanded with a new cinema and other service rooms. It was modernized in 1974 and then completely rebuilt and expanded in 2006.

Cultural opportunities must be created to enrich the quality of life, to enjoy holidays, to experience aesthetic experiences and to learn about the values of local culture. Today, this is the main purpose of events and programs organized by the institution: theatre performances, pop and classical music concerts, gigs of amateur bands, various programs, exhibitions, regional art seminars, etc.

The Drava river and its oxbows are considered to be an angling heaven. The oxbows Ó-Dráva and Kis-bók are located in a beautiful environment, providing unforgettable experience for those wishing to angle here. Angling is possible upon arrangement by the Anglers’ Association, but because the Drava is a state border river crossing the boundary multiple times, fishing here is subject to special regulations.

Water tours

The 149-162 river kilometre section of the Drava is suitable for river sports. Within this reach sporting activities are allowed. The renewed Barcs boat harbour is the starting point for many Drava water tours, and canoe trips have also become increasingly popular in recent years.

The Water Sports and Hiking Division was established in Barcs in February 2001, acting as the basis of local water sports life. The formation of the Division provided a new type of leisure activity for people who love water and nature and long for silence.

Their activities became more complex when the Division expanded their portfolio, thereby undertaking to organize walking and cycling tours. Their 1-8-day organized water tours take place from mid-March to mid-September. Their hiking and cycling day-tours in the area of Barcs and in the area of Duna-Drava National Park take place all year round, normally covering 5-60 km and educating about nature in the area. Equipment and qualified tour guides are provided for the tours. For multi-day tours, accommodation is provided in tent sites. For water tours a backup car is ensured so that the hikers’ luggage can be transported on land. In several cases, the tent sites are far from populated areas, thus if necessary, the car can also assist in some shopping.

Cycling tour: Barcs-Drávatamási bicycle route

The town of Barcs is the capital of the 230 km long Hungarian section of the “Three Rivers International Bicycle Route”.
Being a section of the national “Transdanubian Borderline Cycling Route”, the Three Rivers bicycle route was designated in 2007 between Barcs and Mohács as part of an INTERREG project. Since 2007 “Three Rivers” has become a real brand identified with excellent environmental conditions, the unspoiled nature of the Drava valley, the living local traditions, and gastronomic and wine tourism offering of the “most Mediterranean” region of Hungary.
In the autumn of 2019 the new bicycle route between Barcs and Drávatamási, realised from a 270 million HUF project was technically completed and handed over. The investment was part of the cross-border EV13 GAP project carried out in cooperation between Barcs in Hungary and the Croatian Virovitica-Podravina County, with one of the objectives of building this section being to provide full-length bicycle access to the Hungarian section of the international EuroVelo 13 route. This section finally linked the Hungarian and Croatian networks.
Barcs has become a true hub for cycling along the Drava. By the new 2.3-meter wide and 9-kilometre long Barcs-Drávatamási paved cycling route running along the former state border strip in a wonderful environment, often right next to the Drava, a resting area was also created. On the Croatian side, the bicycle route connection between the Barcs border station and the Jankovich Castle joins in. A bicycle stand has been set up at the castle, and tools can also be found in the car park to facilitate bicycle repairs. In the area one can travel on really high quality asphalt with low traffic. After the castle, crossing the settlements of Bušetina, Okrugljača and Starogradački Marof, one can cross the Drava again on an interesting pedestrian suspension bridge, allowing insight into the backwaters of the river. In addition to online information, visitors are also assisted by an information board and maps in Hungarian-English and Croatian-English.
